The UEFA Euro 2024 tournament is gradually taking shape as the first knockout stage fixtures of the competition (the round of 16) have been confirmed based on the current standings of countries in the competition.
In this phase of the competition, surprising appearances have led fans to view the underdogs as strong contenders. The top-performing team that didn’t win also progresses to the elimination round, intensifying the competition and making it accessible to all nations.
In the previous two versions of the European Championship, the tournament featured 24 teams. Historically, a third-placed team securing four points has been adequate to advance to the round of 16, while on some occasions, three points have been enough to secure a spot in the next stage.
Nevertheless, having two points has not been sufficient for a third-placed team to qualify among the top four at either Euro 2016 or Euro 2020.
