Chicago White Sox ace Dylan Cease had another stellar outing on Thursday.
Every time he takes the ball, the Sox usually win.
This time, however, they failed to take the game against the lowly Kansas City Royals, losing 5-3.
It wasn’t Cease’s fault, though: he pitched six innings and allowed one earned run on three hits and two walks.
He struck out eight opponents in another gem: it just wasn’t enough this time because Zack Greinke shut down the White Sox offense.
Cease has a somewhat odd statistical profile in 2022.
Codify Baseball tweeted that the rate at which he allows earned runs is much lower than the one at which he gives away walks.
“Dylan Cease has 55 walks and has allowed 28 earned runs. The last three MLB pitchers to start 20+ games in a season and have at least twice as many walks as earned runs? Nolan Ryan, Nolan Ryan, and Nolan Ryan,” they wrote on Twitter.

An Odd Statistical Profile
Usually, when a pitcher has control issues, it gets reflected on the number of earned runs he concedes.
This is not the case with Cease, though.
With a 1.96 ERA, he mostly suppresses hits with his incredible stuff, one that helps him obtain lots of strikeouts.
For the year, he is up to 174 punchouts in just 128.2 innings.
Of course, when you strike out so many people, you will get out of self-inflicted (with walks) jams most of the time.
If he keeps pitching like this, Cease will have a great chance of winning the AL Cy Young Award for the first time in his young career.
He will have some competition, of course, but right now, he should be viewed as one of the favorites.
