A shocking incident unfolded on Thursday, August 17th, in Enugwu-Ukwu community of Njikoka Local Government Area, where a landlady identified as Amaka Okonkwo was arrested for allegedly attacking her tenant, Imabong William, with a scalding mixture of hot water and pepper.
The assault was reportedly triggered by the tenant’s inability to pay the new rent imposed on residents of the building.
Imabong William, a native of Akwa Ibom State, had received a quit notice due to her struggles in meeting the increased rental cost.
Seeking more time to secure a new place, William’s plea was met with impatience from her landlady, Amaka Okonkwo.
The situation escalated when Okonkwo purportedly poured the scorching concoction on William.
Local sources reveal that neighbors promptly intervened and rescued the victim, rushing her to an undisclosed hospital for medical attention.
The incident triggered a swift response from the community, leading to the arrest of Amaka Okonkwo by local law enforcement officers at Nimo police Station, who acted on reports filed by concerned neighbors.
Mrs. Ify Obinabo, the Anambra State Commissioner for Women’s Affairs, visited the victim during her treatment at the hospital.
According to Obinabo, the victim shared her side of the story, stating that she had been asked to vacate her dwelling due to her inability to afford the increased rent.
She further explained that she had requested additional time to find alternative accommodation.
Tragically, during the incident, as William was occupied with washing her clothes, Amaka Okonkwo allegedly approached from behind and subjected her to the horrific attack.
Expressing her deep concern and disapproval of the incident, Commissioner Obinabo pledged to ensure justice for the victim.
She sternly warned that the Anambra State Government would not tolerate any form of assault and affirmed that the responsible parties would be held accountable for their actions.
