Here is why Poland were eliminated from Euro 2024

Poland became the first team to be eliminated from the Euro 2024, which is currently being hosted in Germany.

The Polish team’s elimination from the competition was confirmed following their defeat against Austria and the draw between France and the Netherlands. Poland was standing on one leg in the tournament after they were beaten 3-1 in an earlier fixture.

Why did Poland get eliminated with one game left?

Poland’s defeat against Austria on Friday, June 20, 2024, saw the Netherlands top the group, on the same four points with second-place France also with four points, while Austria sits in third on three points.

Poland, on zero points, will not be able to catch Austria’s points tally should they defeat France in their final game. This is because, having lost to Austria, Poland can no longer overtake them, as head-to-head is being used to order teams that are level on points.

What are the criteria for teams advancing to the Round of 16?

The top two teams in each group go through to the round of 16, along with the four best runners-up. The third-placed scenarios are first determined by points, then goal difference, followed by goals scored, wins, lower disciplinary points, and finally European qualifier’s overall ranking.
