Atalanta ends Bayer Leverkusen’s unbeaten run to win Europa League

A hat trick from Ademola Lookman ended Bayer Leverkusen’s 51 games unbeaten run across all competitions in the 2023/24 Europa League final.

The Nigerian threw Xabi Alonso and his Bayer Leverkusen team off balance when he scored two quick goals in the first half of the game which was played in Dublin on Wednesday, May 22, 2024.

The goals from Ademola Lookman ensured Atalanta won their first major European trophy and the club’s first trophy in 1963, becoming the first Italian team to win the UEFA Cup/Europa League since Parma in 1999.

What did Ademola Lookman say about his performance?

“One of the best nights of my life. Amazing performance from the team, we did it, we did it, we did it! Not got much else to say but yeah fantastic. They do always say third time lucky, so yeah it is for us today [winning a final at the third attempt this season]. I’m just happy we won. We won today so yes very pleased.”

This win ensures that Atalanta will play in the final of the UEFA Champions League next season (2024/25) and also face the winner of the game between Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Super Cup later this year.
