“Rice N3, Beans N2” – Trending photo of 1984 shopping list

A trending photo of a shopping list written in the year 1984 has gone viral on social media with netizens expressing shock at the prices.

The list showed that Bournvita was sold at N7, rice was sold at N3, palm oil was sold at N3.50, milk was sold at N7.30, yam was sold at N14, while beans was sold at N2.10.

Many netizens have expressed their disbelief at the prices with many wishing that they could go back in time to buy groceries at those prices.

Others have criticized the government for the current high cost of living, stating that the prices in 1984 were much more affordable.

The shopping list has sparked a heated debate on social media about the state of the economy and the rising cost of living.

Jay Emmanuel said: “Even if we were in that generation we’ll still see a reason or two to complain. For me l’m thankful for where we are today and also hopeful for a better tomorrow 100. People of 1980+ didn’t see as much money as we do today so it’s realistic that the value drops over time.”

Azeez Adekunle Ridwan reacted: “My dad told me that around that period, late 70s to be precise, as an automobile engineer, if he worked from Monday to Friday and he’s able to accumulate #5, the whole weekend is settled. And there’d still be enough to start the new week. That was before Nigeria happened to Nigeria.”
