Prince Harry and Meghan Markle join royal family to receive Queen’s coffin

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle joined the rest of the royal family to greet Queen Elizabeth II’s coffin at Buckingham Palace in London on Tuesday.

The Sussexes were with Prince William and Kate Middleton as well as King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla as the Queen’s body arrived from Scotland, Page Six confirmed on Tuesday.

The Queen’s coffin was transported to Buckingham Palace in a hearse as crowds of people gathered outside the palace grounds to watch the motorcade and mourn the loss of the longest-reigning British sovereign.

Over the weekend, Markle and Harry reunited with the Prince and Princess of Wales to pay tribute to the Queen outside Windsor Castle. The gathering marked the first time the Sussexes appeared publicly with William and Kate since March 2020, when they were photographed together for Commonwealth Day.

A source told Page Six that William had extended an invite to his estranged brother and his wife.

“We are all very grateful — both sides putting all things aside for the Queen,” a royal source had said.

Last week, Harry had rushed to be by the Queen’s side after the family announced that her health was rapidly declining. However, he didn’t make it in time and arrived hours after she died.

The Duke of Sussex had traveled from Germany to Scotland to try to see his grandmother without Markle. Instead, she remained in London. A royal expert claimed that Markle stayed behind because she feared she wouldn’t be welcomed by the family amid tensions.

“She might not be terribly warmly welcomed, to be perfectly candid about it,” BBC royal correspondent Nicholas Witchell claimed.

The Sussexes, who quit their royal duties and moved to California in 2020, were both in Germany when the news about the Queen’s ailing health broke.

Middleton had also stayed in England to be with her and William’s children — Prince George, 9, Princess Charlotte, 7, and Prince Louis, 4 — for their first day of school.

Markle and Harry last saw the Queen when they were in town celebrating her Platinum Jubilee in June. During their visit, the Queen got to meet their 1-year-old daughter, Lilibet, and spend time with their 3-year-old son, Archie.

Harry shared an emotional statement about his grandmother’s death earlier this week.

“Granny, while this final parting brings us great sadness, I am forever grateful for all of our first meetings — from my earliest childhood memories with you, to meeting you for the first time as my commander-in-chief, to the first moment you met my darling wife and hugged your beloved great-grandchildren,” Harry said.

“I cherish these times shared with you, and the many other special moments in between. You are already sorely missed.”

The Queen died on Sept. 8 at the age of 96 after sitting on the throne for 70 years.

Her state funeral will take place at Westminster Abbey on Monday.
