Two key Spanish players, Alvaro Morata and Rodri, have been suspended or banned by UEFA for misconduct during Spain’s Euro 2024 victory parade. Reports indicate that both Morata and Rodri have each received a one-match ban from UEFA for their actions during the celebration.
According to The Athletic, the players were caught on video singing “It’s Spanish, Gibraltar is Spanish,” prompting Gibraltar’s FA to file a complaint with UEFA, labelling the song as “extremely provocative and insulting.” UEFA has since concluded their disciplinary proceedings, resulting in the suspension of AC Milan striker Alvaro Morata and Manchester City midfielder Rodri.
The incident occurred following Spain’s 2-1 victory over England in the Euro 2024 final, held in Berlin on July 14, where Spain secured their fourth European championship. According to reports, there is political tension between Spain and Britain over Gibraltar, a British Overseas Territory, which added further context to the controversy.
Rodri, who was substituted at half-time in the final, and Morata, Spain’s captain, both became the focus of attention for their controversial remarks during the celebrations.
