Equatorial Guinea entered the encounter, boasting the tournament’s highest goal scorer Emilio Nsue, but failed to convert chances they created.
Although Nsue was in his usual form, scoring in the 68th minute, it was disallowed moments later.
Equatorial Guinea’s situation was further complicated at the Stade Alassane Ouattara when Federico Bikoro was shown a straight red card.
Capitalizing on the opportunity, Guinea intensified pressure on their opponents who remained resilient defensively.
The deadlock was finally broken in the stoppage time, with Mohamed Bayo sending Guinea into the quarter-finals.
