Since 2018’s “Outside,” Burna Boy hadn’t slowed down one bit.
He’s since released two albums (including a Grammy-winning one), and there’s only like two artists in Nigeria who can even be in the same conversation as the PH boy.
Now he’s coming with a new album. His first since releasing “Twice As Tall” in 2020 and winning a Grammy in 2021. The rollout for the new album, dubbed “Love, Damini” has already begun with the last week’s release of “Last Last,” the lead single.
“Last Last” has done well so far, and it’s a testament to what to expect from Burna Boy’s seemingly personal sixth studio album.
There is no doubt about the fact that even though “Twice As Tall” won a Grammy, that’s not his best album. Real fans are split between the gritty “Outside” and the mellow “African Giant.” A few more years, and those would be African classics.
What affected TAT was the apparent Grammy campaign. Now that the campaign is done and over with, many people are hoping that Burna Boy will return and give us African Giant era vibes or maybe even dancehall vibes like from the Outside era.
If somehow, he can pull that off beautifully, then I daresay “Love, Damini” might even turn out to be his magnum opus. But what are the chances? Well, July 2 is almost here. We’ll have to wait and see.
But my prediction is that all things considered, “Love, Damini” will be nowhere near “Outside” and “African Giant” in terms of quality. And, no, I don’t think it’ll be his best album. But what do y’all think?
