Wizkid is undoubtedly one of the biggest on this generation and that isn’t going to change.
Even if he wakes up one day, stops doing Afrobeats, and decides his next genre is rap. Or even if he becomes a dancehall artist. Or a street artist. It doesn’t really matter.
All what he’s done in the past that has made him legendary can not be undone. That’s his legacy.
But that status comes with his every move being questioned. Especially the ones that fans do not really understand. His latest decision that has come under fire on social media is his decision to include Naira Marley in his next album.
The next album, “More Love, Less Ego” will feature Naira Marley and other artists like Ayra Starr, Buju, and Ty Dolla sign. While most people don’t have any trouble with those last three names, Naira Marley has been a point of conversation since Wizkid posted it on his Instagram.
Naira Marley is a bonafide street artist and for Wizkid to put him on his project, it means either Wizkid just loves the “Koleyewon” rapper’s music or he’s desperate to get a street hit. So, which one is it?
For one, Wizkid has said in the past that he respects Naira Marley because of how raw he is with his lyrics. So, yeah, Big Wiz definitely likes Naira Marley’s music. But why put him on the album when he has never even featured Olamide on any of his albums?
This has made people think perhaps his next strategy will be to secure a local hit with the help of Naira Marley. The last time a big artist like that linked up with Naira Marley, it was indeed a hit (“Sweet In The Middle”).
Wizkid must know what he’s doing, but it sure raises a lot of questions. Because Naira Marley is not the kind of artist his fans would imagine that he would feature. Especially after “Made in Lagos” put him on the international scene, and even up for a Grammy.
For me, I think Wizkid is just catching cruise and enjoying himself. There’s no logic to the Naira Marley feature, but I sincerely hope it’s a good song. That said, why did he decide to feature Naira Marley, though? Who knows.
