“The Lord of the Rings” is one of the most influential book, film and media empires to this day. Created by the mastermind J. R. R. Tolkien, the stories, characters and themes have been consumed by people throughout the world, offering hope, inspiration and magic to those who need it.
Adapted in the highly successful “Lord of the Rings” trilogy produced and directed by Peter Jackson and further expanded in “The Hobbit” trilogy, the franchise has grossed a tremendous level of success, accolades and awards for their faithful respect to the original source material.
Now the arrival of “Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power” on Prime Video ushers forth a whole new look into the lives of the characters and people of Middle Earth. The notoriously hefty $715 million Amazon reportedly spent on the television series promises a budget to afford new key characters exhilarating new adventures, terrifying journeys and magic beyond one’s wildest dreams.
To understand the complex characters in the Tolkien and “Lord of the Rings” franchise, the New York Post spoke exclusively with two of the rising voices in American geekdom: Paul Florez-Taylor—known as the Comic King—and Luke James—known as Pop Media Maven. As a team, we put our heads together to create the definitive list of “Lord of the Rings” characters that align with astrology and the zodiac. ARIES (MARCH 21 – APRIL 19): Gandalf
As a passionate leader within Middle Earth, Gandalf embodies the power and fire of an Aries. He has a natural affinity to light and flame, wielding it against dark forces such as the Balrog and the Witch King of Angmar. He is a symbol of rebirth and teaches to embrace this power that is latent in all of us. Gandalf is courageous and kind, always ready to charge into battle and defend those who cannot withstand the shadows of evil.
TAURUS (APRIL 20 – MAY 20): Samwise Gamgee
Loyal, compassionate and grounded, Samwise Gamgee represents the mighty Taurus. Nothing and no one can withstand the eternal strength and tenacity of Samwise, which can also be stated for a Taurus, as well. Samwise is also prone to enjoying his senses, living in the moment and carrying the weight of others when they need him the most. Like a true Taurus, Samwise would lay down his life not just for the betterment of the world, but to save his friend from harm.
GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUNE 20): Merry & Pippin
The perfect embodiment of the zodiac sign of Gemini are the two hobbits, Merry and Pippin. In a sense, they’re like two opposite sides of the same coin, but also share so many similarities. Both are excitable by nature, eager for adventure and new horizons and are infinitely curious about the world. There is no adventure too big for them to embark on.
CANCER (JUNE 21 – JULY 22): Arwen & Eowyn
When it comes to two characters who are the heart and soul of “The Lord of the Rings” films, both Arwen and Eowyn embody the sensitivity and strength of the zodiac sign of Cancer. Arwen offers her light and magic to protect her true love, Aragorn, and even risks fading into oblivion as the darkness grows. Eowyn also leads with her emotions when she falls for Aragorn. She, however, shows the fortitude, loyalty and devotion to her family and people especially noticeably: as she even suits up to battle in the war despite everyone else’s fears for her safety.
LEO (JULY 23 – AUGUST 22): Aragorn
As the future and meant-to-be king, Aragorn embodies the bravery, strength and regality of the zodiac sign of Leo. His natural abilities as a warrior and a leader lift him up to be named King Elessar, the rightful King of Gondor. He is protective, honorable and fierce, just like this Fire sign. He also isn’t afraid to be vulnerable and show his love and respect to his fellowship.
VIRGO (AUGUST 23 – SEPTEMBER 22): Gimli
Strong, sturdy and dependable, Gimli embodies the zodiac sign of Virgo. His innate stubbornness aligns with the personality of this Earth sign, as well as his heritage as a dwarf. They have learned to rely on the physical world, build grand cities of their own and guard them defiantly. Gimli also carries a sensitive edge, although he doesn’t show this to everyone.
LIBRA (SEPTEMBER 23 – OCTOBER 22): Legolas
Elegant, charming and ethereal, Legolas the elf easily mirrors the zodiac sign of Libra. Elves are known for their magic, grace and beauty, as are Libras. They also appreciate art, music and connection, willing to build alliances to help the betterment of their people and Middle Earth. Legolas also possesses incredible attention to detail and precision, which Libras often possess. He is fiercely loyal and will find friendship with anyone–even dwarves!
SCORPIO (OCTOBER 23 – NOVEMBER 21): Sauron & Saruman
When it comes to the zodiac sign of Scorpio, they are easily aligned with the Dark Lord Sauron and the corrupted wizard (also known as Istari), Saruman. Their alliance to work together to control the world is mirrored in the two planetary rulers that oversee Scorpio: Mars and Pluto. Saruman thrives on war and building armies to manifest his desires, while Sauron is devoted to total and complete domination. While Scorpios are certainly not a wicked zodiac sign, they are still “all or nothing” about everything they hunger for.
SAGITTARIUS (NOVEMBER 22 – DECEMBER 21): Gollum & the Orcs
Sagittarius is aligned with Gollum and the Orcs. This is because Gollum is inherently curious about the world, always eager to pursue adventure even if it leads him into danger. His ability to climb and escape challenges is exactly how a Sagittarius will parade to victory and new horizons whenever they can. The Orcs, while seen as antagonists in “the Lord of the Rings” are also just out for new experiences and to assert themselves, rather than being caged, controlled or kept in a box. Sagittarius, too, cannot be kept down no matter how anyone tries to, and they will utilize their Fire element to burn through obstacles.
CAPRICORN (DECEMBER 22 – JANUARY 19): Treebeard
Found deep in the forests, the Ents have a deep connection with nature. Treebeard is the perfect embodiment of the zodiac sign of Capricorn. He takes his time to make his decisions, cannot be rushed and knows what he wants in life. He is also infinitely gifted with wisdom and perspective far beyond other characters. Is it no wonder this Earth sign is a grounding force in Middle Earth?
AQUARIUS (JANUARY 20 – FEBRUARY 18): Frodo Baggins & Bilbo Baggins
When it comes to the zodiac sign of Aquarius, Frodo and Bilbo Baggins both easily represent the waterbearer. This is because of their intrinsic desire to explore the world and leave behind the Shire. True to Aquarius, they aren’t afraid to question their lives and look beyond their environment. While other people are too traditional and conversative, both Frodo and Bilbo are fascinated by the wonders that Middle Earth can bring to them.
PISCES (FEBRUARY 19 – MARCH 20): Galadriel
As a powerful mystical elf, Galadriel embodies the zodiac sign of Pisces. She has deep and profound magical powers and a natural grace and elegance to her. She also has a strong tie to her feelings and emotions and honors them, even if others don’t know how to look within. This introspective nature brings her great insight and intuition.
