West Ham have reached an agreement in principle with Manchester United to sign defender Harry Maguire in a deal worth in the region of £30m.
As reported by BBC Sport, the Hammers had previously had a 20-million-pound bid for Maguire rejected by Erik ten Hag’s side, but their revised offer has seen Man United say yes.
Before the recent deal was reached, Maguire was heavily linked with a move away from Old Trafford this summer, having only started eight Premier League matches during the 2022-23 campaign.
Maguire also recently had the Man United captain’s armband taken away from him, with Bruno Fernandes confirmed as the club’s skipper for the 2023-24 season.
Though Manchester United coach, Erik ten Hag has said that he wants to keep Maguire for at least one more season at the club, he was again likely to struggle for action at Old Trafford in the new campaign, with Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez, and Victor Lindelof all ahead of him in the pecking order for the spots at the back.
At 30 years old, he’s still got plenty to offer in the Premier League and West Ham coach David Moyes is thought to be a big fan of the former Leicester City and Hull City defender.
Maguire is said to be open to a switch to West Ham, with personal terms not expected to be an issue despite the defender receiving a pay rise in his Manchester United deal this summer following the club’s qualification for the 2023-24 Champions League.
Maguire trained with Manchester City on Wednesday morning ahead of their Premier League opener against Wolves on Monday Night Football.
United have done due diligence on several defenders, including Jean-Clair Todibo of Nice, should they be in a position to sign reinforcements at centre-back for Maguire and Eric Bailly, whose representatives have held talks with Al Nassr.
Maguire made the move to Old Trafford from Leicester City in 2019, and he has represented the 20-time English champions on 175 occasions in all competitions.
