Wayne Rooney is set to earn three times more as Birmingham boss than former manager John Eustace, reports suggests.
The Sun UK reported that the Championship club is ready to offer Rooney a yearly salary of £1.5 million, which is three times higher than Eustace’s £9,000-a-week wages.
Rooney’s potential appointment has been received with excitement and anticipation from the club’s supporters, given his wide experience as a player and his previous managerial stints.
Birmingham City currently sits sixth in the Championship and has won its last two games, making the possibility of a promotion to the Premier League under Rooney more feasible.
The 37-year-old former Manchester United and England star had a brief spell as the head coach of Derby County before taking on the role of managing DC United in United States MLS in July 2022.
If he accepts the Birmingham job, he will receive a salary more than the £23,653-a-week he earned at DC United.
Rooney’s departure from DC United came after the team missed out on the MLS Cup playoffs. He said in a statement that it was the right time to move on,
“It’s the right time. I’ve done everything I can to get this club into the play-offs. It’s not a single thing that’s happened. It’s about timing.”
Furthermore, reports have suggested that Rooney is already working on assembling his backroom staff, with former teammates Ashley Cole and John O’Shea potentially joining his coaching team.
Ashley Cole, former Chelsea and England left-back, has experience in coaching roles with Derby County, Chelsea’s youth teams, and the England U21s.
While John O’Shea, Rooney’s ex-Manchester United teammate, has worked as a first-team coach at Reading and Stoke City, and is currently an assistant coach for the Republic of Ireland’s senior team.
