The Washington Spirit has named Albertin Montoya as interim head coach for the remainder of the 2022 NWSL season.
He replaces Kris Ward, who was previously relieved of his duties as manager after an altercation during a Spirit training practice.
He joins with extensive professional, collegiate and youth national team experience. He previously served as the former coach of the U.S. women’s Under 17 national team and the WPS’s FC Gold Pride, and assistant coach at both Santa Clara and Stanford University.
“We are thrilled that Albertin has agreed to join us as interim coach for the remainder of the season,” said Mark Krikorian, President of Soccer Operations.
“He is a wonderful teacher of the game and our players will benefit from his development and leadership. We look forward to having Albertin lead this group through the final five regular season matches and are optimistic about what he will be able to add to our club.”
He takes over as the Spirit sit in 11th place on the NWSL table with 13 points in 17 games and a record of 1W-6L-10D.
The team has yet to win since their season opener on May 1, going on a 16-winless streak that includes 10 draws and six losses.

My goal is to provide the best possible experience for these players and do my part to help Michele and Mark build the foundation for the future of the Washington Spirit organization.”
The Spirit returns to action for the first time under new leadership on Saturday, September 10 against the San Diego Wave.
