Nwamini David Okpo, the man who was transported from Nigeria to the United Kingdom by former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu and his wife, Beatrice, so he can give his kidney to their sick daughter, is actually 21 and not 15 as widely reported, according to the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS).
Isa Jere, the NIS Comptroller General, said this during a conversation with editors.
Jere told the editors that Ukpo’s date of birth as captured by the NIS after thorough verification is “12-10-2000. It is the same record on NPC and letter of indigeniship by Ebonyi Government submitted by the applicant.”
On June 21, The Metropolitan Police allegedly detained Ekweremadu and his wife at Heathrow Airports for their involvement in human trafficking and organ harvesting. On June 23, they were hauled before the Uxbridge magistrate court. They were ordered to remain in detention until July 7 after being denied bail.
The prosecution testified before the court that David went to the police and claimed he was 15 years old and that the family was treating him like a slave. Ekweremadu was charged with transporting a juvenile to the UK in order to remove his organs based on the basis of his claim.
