Being Manchester United manager is meant to be fun.
It’s meant to be one of the biggest jobs in club football.
It’s meant to be a job that sets the pulses racing, gets the adrenaline flowing and provides memorable moments that will last a lifetime.
Well, for new United manager Erik ten Hag it’s certainly turning out to be memorable – but for all the wrong reasons.
After losing to Brighton at Old Trafford on the opening day of the season, Ten Hag dragged his troops down to west London to face Brentford. With Cristiano Ronaldo back in the starting lineup, surely things would improve for the Dutchman?
The away side fell behind following an error from David de Gea as he let Josh Dasilva’s effort trickle through his body and into the bottom corner.

Well, not quite.
An absolute disasterclass from David de Gea got United off to a horrific start in the first half, as the Spaniard somehow allowed Josh Dasilva’s tame shot to trickle under his body and into the corner.
He then played a huge part in Brentford doubling their lead – playing a true hospital pass to Christian Eriksen who was swiftly robbed by Mathias Jensen. He then swept the ball home from close range, putting the Bees 2-0 up having not even broken a sweat.

Unfortunately for Ten Hag, it got worse. New Brentford signing Ben Mee towered over teeny tiny Lisandro Martinez at the back post before nodding Ivan Toney’s header back across goal past De Gea.
You can talk all day about how Man United should have signed more players this summer but there are still 11 of them out there. Same number as Brentford. This is pathetic.

There was somehow still time for the Bees to add a fourth, capping off one of the most humiliating 45 minute stretches in Man Utd’s history.
This time, Bryan Mbeumo outmuscled Luke Shaw following a Brentford counter-attack, cooly slotting his finish into the bottom corner.

In researching Overmars, clear his relationship with Ten Hag was vital. Given the revelations about him, feels weird layering compliments but he was an effective sporting director who shielded the manager from noise. At United, Ten Hag doesn’t have that. All on him. Good luck.
