Tanguy Ndombele due for Napoli medical after loan move agreed

Tottenham have agreed terms with Napoli for a season-long loan for out of favour midfielder Tanguy Ndombele, 90min understands.

Ndombele remains Spurs’ record signing following his 2019 arrival from Lyon in a deal worth up to £64m after add-ons.

The loan deal, which will include an option for a permanent transfer next summer, has been agreed between Spurs and Napoli. It still hinges on a medical for the player, scheduled for Tuesday.

The Frenchman was initially a starter under Mauricio Pochettino in his first few weeks at the club, but an injury halted his early momentum and he lost his place. By the time Jose Mourinho took over soon afterwards, a string of niggling injuries did little to help Ndombele’s cause.

Ndombele started 28 Premier League games in 2020/21 but flattered to deceive. He then appeared as though he might have a role under Nuno Espirito Santo, before being benched by Conte last November and returning to Lyon on loan in January.

This summer, Ndombele was among a handful of out of favour first-team players left out of the club’s pre-season squad for the trip to South Korea. Giovani Lo Celso was also omitted from that group and has since sealed another loan to Villarreal.

Despite being set to leave Spurs, Napoli will have the chance to play Champions League football this season, with Napoli returning to the competition themselves after a third place finish in Serie A.
