Super Eagles interim coach, Augustine has insisted that a referee cost his move to play in England during his career as a football player.
Eguavoen said this while giving his verdict on the penalty incident during Nigeria’s 2022 FIFA World Cup playoff first leg against the Black Stars of Ghana at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, on Friday night.
He was careful not to criticize the referee’s decision during the penalty incident involving two of his players and Black Stars’ player, Iddrisu Baba, adding that past incident cost him a West Brom move.
Recall that a year before the 1994 World Cup, Eguavoen had agreed to terms to join West Brom, but the deal was not completed because he was suspended for six months after falling out with a referee in Belgium.
However, during the second half of the match in Kumasi, Moroccan referee, Redouane Jiyed awarded a penalty after a handball inside the box by the Mallorca midfielder from Oghenekaro Etebo’s effort.
Jiyed, however, changed his initial decision after spotting a foul by Kelechi Iheanacho on Baba prior to him handling the ball in the box.
Speaking on the penalty incident during his post-match press conference, Eguavoen said,
“0-0, I think it’s still good enough. I don’t like to speak about referees because I was suspended at some point in time in my career.
“I had a chance to go and play in England. As a player I had it rough with the referee for bad decisions and I was suspended for a very long time, so referees I just leave them to their fate.”
