Ronaldo and Maguire dropped; Firmino starts

Manchester United’s starting XI to face Liverpool does not include Cristiano Ronaldo or Harry Maguire as they look to arrest their poor start to the season.

Erik ten Hag has lost his first two games as Red Devils manager and has acted for the visit of Jurgen Klopp’s Reds by omitting two of their high profile players.

Raphael Varane will partner Lisandro Martinez in the centre of the defence, while Anthony Elanga gets a surprise start with Anthony Martial alongside Maguire and Ronaldo on the bench.

Scott McTominay is included in the starting lineup, with Christian Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes also present in midfield.

Liverpool, meanwhile, welcome Roberto Firmino back into their ranks. The Brazilian missed the draw with Crystal Palace but has regained full fitness to start alongside Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz in attack.

Joe Gomez replaces Nat Phillips at the back, while Harvey Elliott lines up alongside Jordan Henderson and James Milner in midfield. Darwin Nunez is suspended, while the likes of Joel Matip, Ibrahima Konate, Thiago and Diogo Jota are injured.
