The decision was taken when the clubs met at the Premier League’s Annual General Meeting which was held today, Thursday, June 6, 2024. 19 clubs voted in favour of using the technology while the only club against the VAR were Wolves.
Last month, Wolves put forward a motion to abolish VAR after the 2023/24 Premier League season was swamped with most of the games last season. West Midlands side have also listed several reasons as to why they have submitted the proposal, which range from the impact on goal celebrations to ‘diminished accountability of on-field officials.
They also claim that technology has lost the trust people had in them and its reputation, with VAR fuelling completely nonsensical allegations of corruption. However, it is understood that the clubs asked for improvements to the usage of VAR.
What did the Premier League say about the decision to abolish?
“Premier League clubs today voted in favour of continuing to operate VAR in the Premier League. While VAR produces more accurate decision-making, it was agreed that improvements should be made for the benefit of the game and its supporters.”
