More than half of the finals clubs have contract challenges looming, with headlines already swirling about key players locked in until the end of next year.
NRL rules dictate that players off contract next year cannot be tabled offers from rivals until November 1, leaving clubs desperate to tie down talent before that date.
Nowhere is that more obvious than in Melbourne, where Cameron Munster’s agent Braith Anasta revealed officials had put forward an “impressive offer” on Tuesday as they attempt to fend off the Dolphins’ interest.
Coach Wayne Bennett has also expressed the Dolphins’ interest in Latrell Mitchell for 2024 if Munster doesn’t join his competition newcomers, in what would have been an unwelcome story for his former club South Sydney.

But the issue goes well beyond Munster and Mitchell.
The Rabbitohs have also had headlines surrounding the futures of Damien Cook and Cody Walker in recent months, with the pair both off contract next year.
The duo are keen to stay at Souths, but saw Adam Reynolds squeezed out last year over the club’s unwillingness to offer the veteran a long contract.
Dylan Brown’s contract situation has attracted attention, while Parramatta halves partner Mitchell Moses’ deal is also a recurring talking point.
Brisbane have the Payne Haas situation, which continues to bubble along under the surface despite attempts to sweep it away mid-season.
Further north Scott Drinkwater is the highest-profile North Queensland player who can be approached come November, with reports rival clubs are watching with interest.

“You definitely don’t want distractions,” Penrith coach Ivan Cleary said, having avoided them on last year’s run to the premiership.
“Unfortunately the way our NRL system works is 24/7. Every day of the year there is contractual talks potentially.
“In a perfect world we definitely try and take that out of the equation for this period.
“We tried to get some (deals) done earlier in the year. We haven’t been successful on that front, which is fine. So we’ll leave it to later now.”
Defending premiers Penrith still have challenges however.
The club tried to secure Liam Martin’s future earlier this year but was unable to, with Cleary still not giving up hope of sorting it before finals.
Working in their favour is that the man most likely to target Martin and strike centre Stephen Crichton is new Canterbury coach Cameron Ciraldo.
And as a current Panthers assistant, it is also not in his interest to have contract talk ongoing.
“I’d love to get (Martin) locked in,” Cleary said.
“He’s one that we would have loved to have got finalised. We feel like there’s potential for that still to happen. But if not then we’ll wait for a later date.”
