The harrowing discovery was made after Koikai’s sister, Naserian, received a distressing text message from their father at approximately 5:44 am.
The message, which read in part “am sorry it had to come to this,” prompted her to try calling him back, but there was no response.
Alarmed, Naserian rushed to his rented apartment and found the door locked from the inside.
With the assistance of neighbors, they broke a window to gain entry, only to find Koikai’s lifeless body on the floor, surrounded by a pool of blood.
A knife was found in his right hand, and it appeared that he had slit his throat.
Police confirmed the incident as a suicide, and his body was moved to Montezuma Funeral Home pending an autopsy and further investigations.
The postmortem examination revealed that Koikai died from a deep cut to his throat, leading to excessive bleeding.
The motive behind Koikai’s actions remains unclear.
Mourners at Njambi’s burial at Lang’ata Cemetery noted his absence, adding to the mystery.
During Njambi’s requiem mass, Koikai had publicly sought forgiveness from his late daughter for his perceived shortcomings as a father.
“Dear Njambi, my daughter, the time has come for me to atone for my acts of omission or commission on your final journey from this world. It has been one of the most difficult episodes in my life, especially for your close family members – your mother, sister, aunts, uncles, and colleagues in the media and friends in and out of the country,” Koikai had said during the mass.
“I will remember you in many ways and I ask here in public where I may not have fulfilled my duties as your Dad please forgive me, forgive me, and forgive me. And I pray that your soul will rest in Eternal Peace. Till we meet again, bye-bye.”
In his emotional eulogy, Daniel Koikai also reflected on the special moments he shared with his daughter, describing their relationship as having both good and bad times.
He noted that they only met when Njambi was in high school due to his work abroad during her childhood.
“When times were good, we would go shopping and have lunch at some restaurants in the city, and you enjoyed meeting me very much. I deeply miss the good times we shared together,” he wrote.
“During the bad times, we would go days or months without talking, something I blame myself for and will always regret as I’ve lost the chance to make things right with you,” he added.
The family and friends of Daniel Koikai are now left to grapple with the profound grief and unanswered questions surrounding these tragic events.
