New minister of interior, clears over 200,000 passport backlogs after few days in office

The entire passport backlog in the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) has been cleared after a directive from the Minister of Interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-ojo

The Nigerian immigration service has in the past been swamped with backlogs of passport requests and has been known to delay passport issuance due to uncertain bureaucratic procedures and other unknown delays.

However, the new minister of interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-ojo has seemingly come to change that narrative as he has, in his few months of service, cleared over 200,000 passport backlogs.

In a press briefing he stated that “passport issuance is not a privilege but a right for all Nigerians”. The minister further stressed that “Nigerians do not have to wait for months to receive passports”

Thus, within the month of September alone, 200,000 passports were cleared and are now ready to be issued.
