Netherlands defeat African champions Senegal in first group match

Netherlands emerged victorious against African champions, Senegal in their opening Group A match of the 2022 World Cup.

Cody Gakpo got the first goal for the Dutch national team after delivering a perfectly timed header from a beautifully weighted cross from Frenkie de Jon.

Davy Klaassen scored a last-minute goal to seal the win for the Netherlands. A brilliant bit of work from Memphis Depay saw his shot parried by Mendy towards Klaassen, who tapped the ball in to make it 2-0.

The Dutch team will now face Ecuador on November 25 in their second Group-B match.

They are also now undefeated in 16 matches under coach Louis van Gaal. They also stretched an unbeaten record in their opening game at World Cups that dates back to 1938.

Netherlands will now face Ecuador in their second group game on Friday, November 25, at 4pm, with Senegal playing host-nation Qatar earlier the same day at 1 pm.

The winners of Group A will face the runners-up from Group B, containing England, Wales, USA, and Iran. The runner-up in Group A will face the winners of Group B.
