In India, where cricket is nothing less than a religion, both Kohli and Dhoni boast of a huge fan base on social media. Year after year, the two legends have scaled new heights in terms of popularity and 2021 was no different where they pipped the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi – two of the most followed athletes on the planet, in the list of Most searched sports personalities in 2021.
In Yahoo’s year-ender list for 2021, Kohli and Dhoni claimed the top two sports in the list of Most Searched Sports Personalities (Global and Indian). Unlike Dhoni, Kohli is active on social media and has over 170 million followers on Instagram alone.
Neeraj Chopra, who clinched a historic gold medal in Tokyo Olympics 2020, is ranked fifth in the list followed by Sachin Tendulkar, Rohit Sharma, Sourav Ganguly, PV Sindhu and Rishabh Pant.
