Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) secured a crucial 2-0 victory over Real Sociedad in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie.
Despite their domestic success, the mental challenge of the knockout stages loomed large for PSG, especially under new manager Luis Enrique.
The match began with Real Sociedad pressing aggressively, causing PSG difficulties, particularly on the left flank where Lucas Beraldo struggled against Takefusa Kubo’s pace.
PSG’s counters lacked some sharpness, with Mbappé and Dembélé failing to trouble Sociedad’s goalkeeper, Remiro.
The visitors, on the other hand, had their chances, with André Silva and Mikel Merino coming close to scoring.
However, against the run of play, PSG broke the deadlock as Marquinhos’ header from Dembélé’s corner found Mbappé, who calmly finished from close range.
Bradley Barcola doubled the lead with a stunning solo effort from the left wing, sealing the victory for PSG.
Barcola’s performance was particularly notable, considering his previous criticism earlier in the season. His resurgence in form has made him a key player for PSG, especially on the left wing.
Despite PSG’s dominance in the latter stages, Real Sociedad’s strong showing in the first hour keeps the tie open.
