Marseille chief reaffirms confidence in De Zerbi despite manager’s offer to step aside

Olympique de Marseille sporting director Mehdi Benatia has publicly backed head coach Roberto De Zerbi.

Recall De Zerbi recently offered to step down amid Marseille’s home struggles.

Despite sitting third in Ligue 1, a disappointing 3-1 loss to AJ Auxerre at the Vélodrome sparked frustration from De Zerbi, who admitted, “If I’m the problem, I’m ready to leave.”

Marseille had high hopes early in the season with aspirations of challenging Paris Saint-Germain for the title, yet a new squad and tactical approach have tempered those expectations.

While nine points now separate OM from PSG, Benatia insists Marseille are still in a good position.

“We’re third in the table, and it’s a young team with 12 new guys,” he told RMC Sport. “We’re in a project, and you’re not going to walk over everyone.”

Benatia emphasized his full support for De Zerbi, who joined Marseille this summer, and acknowledged the Italian coach’s commitment.

“He suits the city; it’s the love, football, and passion. He told me, ‘If I’m the problem, don’t hesitate. I don’t need money.’ He takes responsibility, and the confidence we have in him is solid.”
