Man Imprisoned For Adulterating Fertilizer With Sand In Jigawa

A 40-year-old man identified as Baffa Haruna Turaki has been handed a six months jail term by a Jigawa State Mobile Court for adulterating fertilizer with sand.

The Presiding Judge, Mannir Sarki Abdullahi, convicted Turaki on Wednesday, May 8, on a suspected case of adulteration of fertilizer intended for sale, contrary to Section 184 of Penal Code Law.

The suspect pleaded guilty and was sentenced as follows: six months in custodial facility or fine option of N80,000, three weeks in custodial facility without fine option, bond to be of good behaviour, and if breached, to serve three months in custodial facility.

Personnel of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Jigawa State Command arrested Turaki on Saturday, 4th of June, 2022 when he was about to sell an adulterated bag of NPK fertilizer at the Agricultural produce and grains market in Hadejia and was discovered to be mixed with sand.

Investigation led to the discovery of seven additional bags of similar adulterated fertilizer in his possession.

Turaki, of Kasuwar Kuda Quarters, Hadejia LGA, confessed to be making the said fertilizer in his house and selling to unsuspecting members of the public at its original market value of N16,000 per bag.

Meanwhile, the exhibits recovered were seized and disposed by the court.
