The Lagos State Police Command has placed on restriction of vehicular movements in some areas of the state as it holds the state’s by-election on Saturday.
Benjamin Hundeyin, spokesperson of the police in Lagos, made this known on Friday via a post on X.
Gistreel Reports that a by-election for Surulere I federal constituency, in the federal house of representatives, is scheduled for Saturday, February 3.
The seat in the lower legislative chamber became vacant after President Bola Tinubu appointed Femi Gbajabiamila, immediate-past speaker of the house, as his chief of staff.
On Thursday, Kayode Egbetokun, inspector-general of police (IGP), ordered the restriction of vehicular movement in 26 states where run-off and by-elections will take place.
Olumuyiwa Adejobi, force public relations officer, said in a statement that the restriction applied to all forms of vehicular movement on roads, waterways and other forms of transportation. He added that the restriction will be from 12 am to 6 pm.
Hundeyin further said there will be no restriction of movements in other parts of Lagos unaffected by the poll.
“CLARIFICATION: In the forthcoming bye-election in Lagos State, restriction of movement is applicable only in the election area, Surulere Federal Constituency I,” his post reads.
“However, Funsho Williams Avenue will be free for passage only. Movement into and out of feeder roads off Funsho Williams Avenue will not be permitted.
“There is no restriction of movement in other parts of the state.”
The elections will fill vacancies in three senatorial districts, 17 federal and 28 state constituencies across 80 LGAs.
Individuals on essential services like officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), accredited media personnel, and emergency responders are exempted from the restriction.
