Why I decided to play for England instead of Ghana

Manchester United midfielder, Kobbie Mainoo has revealed why he decided to play for England instead of his birth country, Ghana.

The 19-year-old was speaking in an interview while on international duty with England at the ongoing Euro 2024 which is being hosted in Germany. Kobbie Mainoo said he respects his Ghanaian heritage but it has always been his dream to play for England.

What did Kobbie Mainoo say about choosing England over Ghana?

“I am proud of my Ghanaian heritage and there was speculation, but, yeah, it has always been a dream to play for England. I am happy to be here. It was considered, but I wanted to play for England.”

He also spoke about the decision of Manchester United to keep Erik Ten Hag as the manager of the club despite the rumours linking him away from the club.

He said,

“Obviously happy to be building with him. He’s already got two trophies and hopefully, there are more to come. It is nice to have that peace of mind, that we know what manager we are going back to in the new season.”

He continued,

“I am so grateful for him, that he put so much trust in me and belief in me to play in the team. I can’t thank him enough.”

Mainoo made his senior debut for England in March 2024, which was enough for Gareth Southgate to include him in the squad for Euro 2024. The 19-year-old made his first appearance at the tournament as a late substitute in Sunday’s 1-0 Group C win.
