- Kenneth Okonkwo’s statement touched on the circumstances of Dele Farotimi’s arrest, describing it as unjust.
- He also speculated that those seeking to intimidate Farotimi may resort to other means if he continues to resist their attempts.
Human rights advocate Kenneth Okonkwo has expressed concerns about the well-being of fellow activist Dele Farotimi, who is currently being held in a Correctional Center.
Okonkwo’s concerns stem from Farotimi’s critical views on the Nigerian criminal justice system, as expressed in his book, which may have provoked powerful individuals to take action against him.
Kenneth Okonkwo warned that Farotimi’s life is at risk and urged authorities to ensure his safety while in prison.
He emphasized that the government must allow the law to take its course and avoid resorting to extrajudicial measures.
Kenneth Okonkwo argued that Farotimi’s health and well-being must be prioritized, and any attempts to intimidate or harm him must be prevented.
“Dele Farotimi was hale and hearty when he was unjustly arrested. He must be healthier whenever he comes out since the government that is holding him unjustly is wealthier than him.
“My guess is that these corrupt elites may settle this matter through another means if Dele Farotimi resists all their attempts at intimidating him,” Okonkwo wrote on his X handle on Saturday.
“The authorities must be aware that the whole world is watching. They have chosen the legal option, and must not resort to anything funny. Let the law be allowed to run its full course” he added
Farotimi was arrested on allegations of defaming Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Afe Babalola.
Mr Macaroni had also condemned Dele Farotimi’s arrest, calls for accountability.
Mr Macaroni in a post on his X handle on Wednesday expressed shock, alleging that the police are now letting themselves to be used by political elites to oppress Nigerians.
Mr Macaroni stated that the development is what happens when Nigerians support that civil matters be treated as criminal matters because of political differences.
