Jason Momoa’s got some fresh ink.
The “Aquaman” actor debuted a new tattoo on the side of his head Wednesday, days after he shaved off his signature long hair for a good cause.
Momoa, 43, turned to artist Keone Nunes, who specializes in traditional Hawaiian tattoos, for the intricate geometric design — which starts at the front of his hairline and extends down his neck.
The actor was born in Honolulu, and his father is Native Hawaiian.
“I got something pretty special for you,” Momoa told his friends in the social media video, adding in his caption that the artwork was “20 years in the making.”
And he wasn’t exaggerating: “I have known Jason’s father Joe since high school and started talking to Jason over 20 years ago on doing work on him,” Nunes captioned a photo with Momoa after the session. “With family and friends to support him, yesterday was the first step in his journey.”
The new tat resembles the large design on Momoa’s left forearm, which the star previously explained was inspired by a Hawaiian family crest.
“It’s our aumakua, our family crest, guardian – the shark, it’s supposed to take the darkness out of your heart and bring the light in – but we’re still working on that,” Momoa said in a 2013 interview.
Momoa’s new Apple TV+ show, “Chief of War,” follows “the story of the unification and colonization of Hawaii from an indigenous point of view,” per Variety. In addition to starring in the series, Momoa serves as a writer and executive producer.
