In the meantime, “Stand Strong” will have to do the trick.
That’s the tricky thing about starting an album rollout. You almost can’t ever roll it back and call it quits. Regardless of how many singles don’t become successful.
People are waiting for the album, and you’re gonna have to give them a date, and it’s too late now to return to the drawing board to start over and take another year. So you just have to put the album out.
So many artists have given in to that pressure and have plunged themselves into a hole so deep no amount of success would be enough to get out of. But let’s hope that’s not Davido. Must not be.
Davido has taken a lot of breaks, in the past two years. First, he went away for a few months in 2020 before coming back with “FEM” and ultimately releasing “A Better Time.”
Then he went on another hiatus before finally releasing “Champion Sound” last year. Since then, he hasn’t really been active—at least when it comes to his music career. That’s quite a lot of breaks for someone that isn’t Kendrick Lamar, I gotta say.
But whenever OBO comes out of these breaks, he always seems more focused and ready for some big things. Granted, many of those great things haven’t really materialized, but just maybe this is Davido’s time?
Well, what great thing does he have planned for us this time, and how does he wanna do it?
“Stand Strong” ft. The Samples
Someone reminded me earlier today that before I go have an opinion on the new songs that I should take into consideration that this is people’s hard work. So I’m going to consider the best I can.
Especially since, for Davido, it’s not really that hard to see that he’s a hardworking fellow. If you give most guys the kind of leverage and success he has, they probably won’t grind as half as he does. So I see the work, I truly do. And everybody else can too.
But let’s put that aside for a moment and discuss this new song, “Stand Strong”? What’s the idea? In many ways, it’s like “FEM.” It’s about himself and his fans and what he can do and how big he is and how strong he stands. Except, all of that ain’t really news. So, what’s the idea?
My guess would be this is the first track on the album and like everybody else, he also wants to talk about himself before he starts talking about bum bum. Okay. The only problem is as a single, this song has a bigger job than that. This is supposed to be a song everyone in the streets will be singing in a week from now.
But if you really listen to what he did on “Stand Strong,” it’s hard to imagine on what streets they’d be singing this on a week from now. Maybe what I’m saying is, that this is not a clear-cut hit potential. I mean, but who cares?
Davido is evolving and doing some conscious stuff, so why not? Well, I’d like to point out that he didn’t really do anything different from what we know he could do. Not really. The choir is a different touch, sure. But that’s about it.
So, again I ask, what is the idea behind “Stand Strong”? Maybe it doesn’t have an idea. Maybe it doesn’t need to. Just maybe the numbers will have to do. There’s a lot of maybe’s here. Only a Davido song can do that.
