New York City FC and Atlas go head-to-head on Wednesday in the annual Campeones Cup.
The competition pits the MLS Cup Playoffs champion against the winner of Liga MX’s Campeon de Campeones and has been held three times so far since 2018.
MLS has two wins so far through Atlanta United (2019) and the Columbus Crew (2021), while Liga MX’s sole victory came thanks to Tigres in 2018.
NYCFC enter the match in horrendous domestic form, winning just one of their last 10 MLS matches and taking only five points during that run. Atlas, meanwhile, are no better off, picking up just two wins and 10 points from their opening 15 matches of the Apertura campaign.
With both sides struggling so much, this match is about as unpredictable as it gets when it comes to an MLS vs Liga MX clash, so you’re going to want to find out how you can watch live…
This is the first competitive meeting between these two teams.
NYCFC
Anton Tinnerholm and Alfredo Morales both miss out through injury, while the MLS Cup champions will have to go in search of another trophy without Golden Boot holder Taty Castellanos, who departed for La Liga side Girona in January.
Atlas
Aldo Paul Rocha is the only confirmed absence for Atlas due to a hamstring injury.
Both teams are in equally terrible form, with confidence about as low as it can get.
However, there’s a trophy on the line here and there’s no better way of overcoming a bad run than by winning some silverware.
NYCFC have slightly more firepower and more to play for in that they still have another MLS Cup Playoffs campaign to prepare for.
The quality from last season is still there and with home advantage, the Cityzens should deliver another Campeones Cup victory for Major League Soccer.
Prediction: NYCFC 2-1 Atlas
