A tragic incident occurred on Sunday, July 23, 2023, when an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) attached to the Ondo State Police Command lost his life in a hit-and-run incident caused by a driver who callously crushed him to death and fled the scene.
The officer was crushed to death at a checkpoint along the Benin-Owo Expressway in Ifon, Ose Local Government Area of the state.
According to eyewitness accounts, the deceased officer bravely attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver callously hit him and fled the scene without stopping.
The shocking event unfolded on the highway, prompting a response from fellow officers upon receiving the alert.
Mrs. Funmilayo Odunlami, the spokesperson of the Ondo State Police Command, confirmed the tragic incident.
She clarified that initial reports suggesting the officer was killed by suspected kidnappers were inaccurate and clarified that it was a clear case of a hit-and-run.
“A suspected vehicle, while the police were trying to stop the driver, he didn’t stop. So, our officers were alerted on the highway, but on getting to a particular place around Ifon, the driver swerved and hit an ASP, and the officer died immediately,” stated Mrs. Odunlami.
In a fortunate turn of events, the driver responsible for the heinous act was pursued and subsequently apprehended by military personnel in Sobe, Edo State.
The suspect was taken into custody to face justice for the tragic incident.
