Shehu Sani, the former senator for Kaduna Central, has pointed out the importance of imposing penalties on those who get their Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC) but decide not to vote.
He believes that enforcing fines on individuals who hold a PVC yet skip voting could significantly tackle the issue of low voter turnout during elections.
Sani shared his thoughts on this matter through his official X account on Sunday.
His suggestion is aimed at boosting civic engagement and accountability among citizens during elections, ultimately reinforcing democracy by encouraging people to use their voting rights and play an active role in shaping the country’s future.
He said, “Heavy fine should be imposed for those who collected PVC but refused to vote.
“That is the best way to address the problem of low voter turnout,” he said.
In related news, as the September 21, 2024 governorship election in Edo State approaches, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has rejected the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) request to transfer the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Anugbum Onuoha.
Concerns have arisen due to Onuoha’s ties with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mr. Nyesom Wike, leading to some disputes.
