Nilsson was born on June 15, 1941, in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, New York City.
His paternal great-grandfather, who was born in Sweden but subsequently immigrated to and naturalized in the United States, established an “aerial ballet” performance.
His mother, Elizabeth Nilsson, was affectionately referred to as “Bette” by the rest of the family. Charles Augustus Martin and Florence Madeline Martin gave birth to her in New York in 1920.

After surviving that, he began putting pressure on his previous label, RCA Records, to produce a boxed set retrospective of his career, and he resumed recording, aiming to complete one more album. He finalized the album’s voice recordings with producer Mark Hudson, who kept the session tapes.
Nilsson died of heart failure in his Agoura Hills, California, home on January 15, 1994, at the age of 52.
Personal Best, a 2-disc CD anthology he collaborated on with RCA, was released in 1995. The final album, Lost and Found, was released on November 22, 2019.
Nilsson is buried in Westlake Village, California’s Valley Oaks Memorial Park.

On October 24, 1964, Nilsson married Sandi McTaggart. Other than his stepson, Scott Roberts, they had no children. In 1967, they divorced.
On December 31, 1969, Nilsson married Diane Clatworthy. Zak Nine Nilsson, their only child, died of colon cancer on March 4, 2021.
In 1974, Nilsson and Clatworthy divorced.
On August 12, 1976, Nilsson married Una O’Keeffe. They were married till he died on January 15, 1994. They have six kids.
