German Berterame is set to feature in his first Clasico Regio on Saturday.
The player joined Rayados de Monterrey from Atletico San Luis on July 3, serving the Nuevo Leon side as a reinforcement ahead of the 2022 Liga MX apertura.
Though Rogelio Funes Mori was expected to lead the attack against Tigres UANL, his sudden injury during the match against Toluca puts Berterame in the spotlight.
But the pressure is on for the new player.
“Honestly they’ve told me it’s a very intense match. It goes beyond just a classic rivalry, it’s a little bit more. But we will try to be our best, and hopefully [the points] will stay at home, which is obviously all any of us want,” he said exclusively to 90min.
The upcoming match between crosstown rivals Tigres UANL and Rayados de Monterrey will mark its 128 edition. The Clasico Regio can be dated back to 1974, and remains to this day one of the most anticipated matches of the Liga MX season.
Tigres currently holds the edge, winning 46 derbies to hold an overall record of 46W-38D-42L. But Rayados are expected to come back stronger this year after seeing a busy summer transfer window.
Though Rayados currently sit in second on the league table with 20 points in nine games, Tigres is not far behind, boasting 18 points in eight matches and a record of 6W-2L-0D. With the two sides neck and neck at the moment, Saturday’s match should be one to watch.
