Former Super Eagles midfielder Seyi Olofinjana has expressed concern over the lack of playing style in the national team.
In the recent 2022 World Cup qualifiers games, the Super Eagles have not performed really well having lost to lowly rated Central African Republic and putting embarrassing displays to beat Cape Verde away from home through an own goal.
Last year, the team also squandered a four-goal lead against Sierra Leone in a 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying game at the Samuel Ogbamudia Stadium in Benin.
Olofinjana, who represented Nigeria from 2000 to 2011, making a total of 48 caps, has now voiced his concern, stating that the current Super Eagles team lacks football identity and playing philosophy.
“I am very concerned and at the same time I can understand why I spoke about having an identity and playing philosophy,” Olofinjana told The PUNCH.
“There must be some sort of identity. We must win or lose as a result of a particular system that the technical staff must have built over time.
“Until we have that (philosophy), we would continue to lose games and win the odd ones.
“These days, football goes beyond just putting 11 talented players on the field, they need to know what they’re doing.
“A country of Nigeria’s status should have a playing philosophy, a playing style that explains when you win games. What form did it take and why do you lose games? There needs to be an identity and I feel it should go beyond Gernot (Rohr). It should be from all our age-grade teams to the Super Eagles,” he added.
