Daniel Podence secures long-awaited victory

Wolves secured their first Premier League win in 13 games with a 1-0 victory over Southampton at Molineux.

Daniel Podence’s strike in first-half injury time proved to be enough for Bruno Lage’s men, who held Southampton to just one shot on target across the 90 minutes.

Wolves weren’t exactly much better than their visitors in the first half but did make it into the break ahead thanks to Podence’s strike in injury time. Summer signing Matheus Nunes drilled a cross into the box and the winger had to improvise to bundle the ball past Gavin Bazunu in the Saints net.

Another recent arrival, Sasa Kalajdzic, started the game but failed to provide the spark Wolves were looking for in attack. In fact, it was a Southampton striker, Che Adams, who had the biggest impact on the game.

On his 100th Premier League appearance, Adams had the ball in the back of the net shortly after the hour mark but was caught by VAR using his arm to prod over the line, having completely misjudged his jump to try and head home unmarked on the goal-line.

Adams figured out how to use his head just minutes later, however, but could only divert his effort onto Jose Sa’s crossbar.

Neither of those efforts counted as a shot on target for Southampton, whose only real ‘test’ of Sa came from a decent James Ward-Prowse free-kick that the goalkeeper was relieved not to have to pluck from top bins.

The victory was Wolves’ first in the Premier League since April 2 and carried them out of the bottom three, while Southampton tumbled to 12th.
