Argentina showed why they were the Champions of the World following their display of dominance from the first minute of their second group game of the 2024 Copa America.
Manchester City striker Julian Alvarez and Fiorentina midfielder Nicolas Gonzalez were the first to test Chile goalkeeper Claudio Bravo, early on in the game. Argentina’s best opportunity of the first half came to Lionel Messi but his effort was denied by the post.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 88th minute when Lisandro Martinez scored the winning goal of the match. This win continues Argentina’s dominance in the history of the game against Chile as Argentina took their unbeaten run to 31 games in Copa America.
Argentina has gone 10 consecutive CONMEBOL Copa América matches without being behind on the scoreboard (W8 D2). The last time they were losing in a tournament match was in the semifinals in 2019 against Brazil.
Argentina are top of Group A and are guaranteed a spot in the last eight with a game to spare. They play their final group game against Peru on Sunday, June 30, 2024.
In the other group game, Canada picked up their first-ever Copa America win courtesy of a 1-0 victory against Peru. The goal was scored by Lille striker Jonathan David scored the crucial goal which is the the first since manager Jesse Marsch was appointed in May 2024.
