The nine-time Champions had most of the possession in the game against Costa Rica but they were unable to find the back of the net. Marquinhos thought he had given Brazil the lead when he had the ball in the net in the 30th minute after he tapped in at the back post following a Raphinha free-kick but the Video Assistant Referee ( VAR) ruled it out for offside.
Lucas Paqueta was close to finding the back of the net but he hit the woodwork just after the hour mark and also missed two late chances from goal-scoring positions to give the Samba Boys the victory.
In the other group D game, Colombia beat Paraguay 2-1 with James Rodriguez leading the line with a fantastic performance. Rodriguez crossed to the far post and picked out Daniel Munoz to head in Colombia’s opener in the 32nd minute at the 2024 Copa America.
The former Real Madrid player provided another assist in the first half with a free-kick that was scored by Crystal Palace midfielder Jefferson Lerma. Brighton’s Julio Enciso pulled a goal back for Paraguay in the 69th minute but Colombia held on to claim the three points.
Brazil will face Paraguay in their next group game while Colombia will play Costa Rica.
