Championship leaders, Burnley are now being investigated by the Football League and could even be handed points deduction for fielding a “weak” team in last weekend’s 0-0 draw against Reading.
Vincent Kompany’s Burnley has lit up the Championship this season with a scintillating brand of possession-based football that has allowed them to romp to promotion, and almost definitely the league title.
The Sun has now reported that they are being investigated by the EFL after the match against Reading in which Kompany made six changes. It was gathered that Huddersfield Town who are just one point ahead of Reading were furious after the match which ended in a draw, and reached out to the EFL to complain about Burnley’s weakened side.
The EFL has now written Burnley, informing them that they may be fined or even hit with a points penalty if found guilty.
The Clarets have however stressed that they made changes to utilize their squad and give several fringe players some much-needed game-time in the match, which finished goalless.
Although Burnley fell to a shock 2-1 defeat to QPR on Saturday, April 22, the Clarets are still in pole position to clinch the Championship crown ahead of Sheffield United after a stunning campaign.
