Mainz manager Bo Svensson has emerged as a new favourite to replace Graham Potter as Brighton manager.
Potter left the Seagulls earlier this month to replace the sacked Thomas Tuchel at Stamford Bridge, leaving his old side fourth in the Premier League after six games.
Brighton want their new boss in the AMEX dugout in time for their next game – away at Liverpool on 1 October – and 90min understands Svensson has overtaken other candidates as the Albion’s favoured appointment.
Svensson’s Mainz currently sit sixth in the Bundesliga, having won three of their opening six games. The Dane has reversed their fortunes somewhat dramatically since being appointed in January 2021, when they were in danger of dropping out of the German top tier.
However, they would finish that season comfortably above the relegation zone before coming eighth in 2021/22.
Brighton have eyed candidates with similar profiles to Potter in their search. Roberto De Zerbi has been considered, having impressed in Serie A with Sassuolo, while Nottingham Forest’s Steve Cooper and Bodo/Glimt’s Kjetil Knutsen are also contenders.
