Dola was however released after serving six years and four months in March 2025. A month later, Dola was featured in Massawe Japani’s show, where he narrated the events that led to the death of his wife.
According to him, they had not argued or quarrelled about anything the night before although Wambui came home late at around 9.30. He recalls that he prepared supper and they even ate together.
The following day, a scuffle ensued among them after Dola decided to play music.
“It was May 1, 2011(Sunday). We were at home and we were supposed to go to church. It was around 11, I woke up and headed to the sitting room and switched on the music and I went back to the bedroom. But then, there were underlying issues. She was annoyed by the music and went and unplugged the system from the socket saying I was disturbing her sleep, I was angered but I fixed it back and reduced the volume,” he narrated.
Upon returning to the bedroom, his late wife raised a series of complaints about him. Sensing that the situation might get worse, he wanted to leave the room but with their son, who was lying at his coat.
“She was trimming the edges of her dreadlocks. I don’t know what her intentions were. She came at me with the scissor which pierced my right hand questioning where I was taking her child,”Dola said.
Dola says he struggled to repossess the scissors and threw it on the bed. As she went after them, he grabbed her and they fell. At that point, Kabiru hit her head on the right side, an injury that she later succumbed to.
“It was a pure accident at home, something went wrong, it’s something that I regret to date. If I had walked out, we wouldn’t be here today,” he said.
Dola’s biggest mistake was to leave the home for a long time instead of coming back to attend to his wife who had lamented that she was hurt in the incident. When he left, he went Kabiru’s brother where he informed him of what had transpired and they planned to sort out the issues later that evening.
“I ignored because I had an injury on my hand as well. I didn’t check the extent of her injury,” he said. “Had I gone back, probably I would have realized that she was hurt more than what I thought.”
When he returned home, he was surprised that his wife was still angry over the morning incident such that she had confined herself on the bed. When he went over to her, she was unresponsive with some blood on the right side of her head.
“Her pulse was zero, I checked the neck, chest and between her thighs, it was zero. I realized she was dead. I fainted,” he said.
He came around after 2 hours. He was confused at the time. He later ended up in Naivasha, something he can’t explain to date.
“It later came out as PTSD, the trauma that one gets after going through a shocking incident. When I came to my senses, I surrendered to the police, I was returned to Nairobi and investigations began,” he said.
Dola is yet to reunite with his now 15-year old son, who is under the custody of his in-laws.
