Aston Villa’s manager, Unai Emery, is a big fan of the 22-year-old, and with their qualification for the UEFA Champions League, Villa is looking to strengthen their squad. Maatsen, who spent six months last season at Borussia Dortmund, was rumored to be moving to the German club, but the deal with Chelsea has now fallen through.
During his time at Chelsea, Maatsen made only three starts, one in the Premier League and two in the Carabao Cup, along with 12 substitute appearances in the first half of last season before moving to Dortmund.
He started all seven of Dortmund’s Champions League games and 15 of their 18 Bundesliga matches. Currently, Maatsen is with the Netherlands at the European Championship in Germany due to injuries to Frenkie de Jong and Teun Koopmeiners.
As a result of this deal, Chelsea could most likely be getting, Villa’s forward player, Jhon Duran, as they are seeking a striker to support Nicolas Jackson next season.
