In the video that has since gone viral, the 61-year old thespian was seen lying on a bed with bandages on his chest. His cheeks seemed swollen and he could barely utter a word.
“Igbo people I greet you all,” he began his speech but he was unable to proceed.
A fellow actor, Kingsley Orji, went ahead to explain what was ailing the veteran actor, revealing that he is suffering from kidney related issues.
“It has not been easy. He has been in this condition for months. He wants to go for a kidney transplant. He just came back from ICU a couple of days ago. He was responding to treatment but not very well,” Kingsley explained.
He added that Amaechi was taken home from hospital in his delicate condition due to lack of funds.
“…But it is not advisable. He barely talks well. Please he needs your help,” he further appealed.
Amaechi featured in popular Nigerian films including Aki and Paw Paw, where he played the role of the father of the two main characters. In 2016, it was rumored that he was suffering from Diabetes. Since then, he has not featured in any new movies.
His situation comes just weeks after the death of Mr Ibu, another popular Nigerian actor.
Mr Ibu, whose real name is John Okafor, passed away in March 2, 2024 at the age of 62, after a long battle with illness.
One of his leg was amputated and in November, his family called upon well wishers to donate funds so as to sustain his treatment.
He is reportedly survived by 11 children.
