Andre Onana reacts after being scored from halfway line on Old Trafford debut

Cameroon international, Andre Onana has taken the blame after being lobbed from the halfway line during Manchester United’s 3-1 win against Lens.

The Cameroon international was appearing in front of his home fans for the first time during the pre-season clash against the French outfit, when 23 minutes in he was made to look foolish as he clawed at thin air trying to keep out Florian Sotoca’s audacious effort.

The strike from range left Onana in a heap inside the United goal and put the Ligue 1 outfit in front, which remained the case for the remainder of the first half. Erik ten Hag fired his troops up for the second half and goals from Marcus Rashford, Antony and Casemiro helped spare their goalkeeper’s blushes.

After the match was concluded, rival fans of United poked fun at the shot-stopper on social media, when in truth, it was a moment of magic from Sotoca to break the deadlock.

Onana took responsibility over the halfway line goal after the match. Speaking to MUTV, he said;

“I’m happy for the win. Of course we can always be better. Some things we have to try to fix. Like I always say, I am responsible for everything especially when we concede goals.

“I’m proud of what my defenders did. I’m the big man at the back so I take all the criticism, all the pressure on me.

“It was a great game for me and for the guys, some important goals and I’m happy for everything. I think this year will be great, I am very excited for the coming games.

“I’m already excited for Wolves, but we will have to prepare well because it’s not going to be easy.

“Everybody is working hard and I’m very confident and positive everything will be right if we do the right things.”

Onana’s competitive debut for United will come against Wolves on August 14 after a busy transfer window for the English side.
