Algeria failed to advance to the Africa Cup of Nations round of 16 after a 1-0 defeat against Mauritania in Group D.
The Greens needed a win to edge Burkina Faso who finished second, but surprisingly failed to beat Mauritania.
The first half goal by Yali Dellahi proved to be the match’s decider, sending Riyad Mahrez’s country packing from the Ivory Coast tournament.
Meanwhile, Burnkina Faso managed to pull through to the next stage, despite losing 2-0 to group leader Angola.
In all three Group D games, Algeria were unable to win a single match, drawing two against Angola and Burkna Faso respectively, before losing to Mauritania.
Their exit makes it the second consecutive time they are leaving the continental tournament at group stage, within three years, the first coming in 2021, despite winning the prize in the 2019 edition.
